The objective of this program is to learn the fundamentals of sculling so that you can use the single rowing boats independently without supervision. However, sculling with a partner is highly recommended at all times even after you have completed the class.

The program consists of 8 classes. By the end of the sessions, all participants should be able to pass a basic sculling test in a racing scull to test their ability to row independently without supervision.

Course Outline
Day 1 • Boat handling, launching, and carrying of single
• Grip/overlap and setting stretchers
• Hand crossover and getting in and out of boat
• Circle drill with arms and back rowing
Day 2 • Proper feathering
• Recovering from a flip
• Rowing at half-slide
• Turning, backing and docking
Day 3 • Rowing at full slide
• Sculler’s catch
• Steering and course tips
Day 4 • More rowing and applying pressure
• 1-2 drills
Day 5 • Transition to race single
• Back to arms and back and half-slide
Day 6 • Rowing in race single at full slide
• Spinning boat and backing
Day 7 • Full slide rowing with some drills
Day 8 • Final review
• Test/checkout

By the end of the class, all participants should be able to pass a basic sculling test in a racing scull to test their ability to row independently without supervision.

After passing the test, you will have the privilege of taking out a RCRC single scull boat on your own. You will be passed or failed by the instructor for each of the following activities:

sculling in a single
  • Describe boat travel pattern on the river
  • Sign in
  • Transport boat to the dock
  • Self launch from the dock
  • Left circle
  • Right circle
  • Ten full strokes
  • Reverse length of the dock
  • Maintain 1 minute at the catch
  • Self dock the boat
  • Return boat to the boathouse
  • Bring up the oars
  • Sign out
